We're finalists at this year's MARAs - here's why it matters
- last updated 16 Sep 2016
We’re chuffed to bits to be finalists in two categories at this year’s Marketing & Digital Recruitment Awards. We’ve been shortlisted for Best Marketing Strategy & our Head of Marketing – Lisa Mahoney – has been shortlisted for Marketing Star of the Year.
Why does this matter?
Rather than sit here and gloat, let’s talk about what this actually means and why it might matter to you.
The biggest challenge for any recruitment business is to steer clear of the negative stereotypes that surround recruiters. Shark-like tactics, obnoxious InMails, ignorance – just some of the claims we see plastered over LinkedIn on a daily basis.
The truth is, these stereotypes exist for a reason – like any industry, a proportion of the ‘professionals’ in this world just aren’t very good at their job. And combatting this was a huge part of why Digital Gurus began.
We work really hard to change the perception of the industry by making sure you guys get a really great recruitment experience. Part of this is making sure you get to know our Gurus and understand that they’re real, passionate, intelligent people with imperfections, just like the rest of us. They make mistakes, they don’t know absolutely everything (let’s face it –that’s impossible), they have bad days – but we're really proud to say that they are a cut above the rest and some of the hardest working & most successful recruiters in the industry.
We’ve approached this with a big push on video recruiting and so far this year we’ve produced 65 videos, with close to 20,000 views. The feedback from you guys has been great – seems you like being able to put a face and a personality to a name. We don’t overproduce our videos - the goal is to make sure our Gurus show that they’re approachable and knowledgeable.
The thing is, it’s only a matter of time before every other Tom, Dick and Sally on LinkedIn starts following suit. So we’re forced to ask ourselves what actually makes us different?
The bigger picture
There’s a much bigger problem at play than battling the negativity of the recruitment industry – the global digital skills shortage is really affecting the rate of digital transformation. In the UK, a recent government report stated that we need 700k more digital/tech professionals by 2020 in order to sustain the current level of growth in digital. Ouch.
Businesses are struggling to find the people they so desperately need to make their visions they've worked so hard for a reality.
So, what are we doing about it? Well, from this point forward, Digital Gurus is investing heavily in helping to close this gap. We will be working really hard to upskill digital talent at all levels.
To kick things off, we’ve partnered with Makers Academy, offering a free 8 week Coder Starter Kit – a programme designed to help anyone considering learning to code. So far this has had a phenomenal response and we’re so glad to have so many of you on board. If you’re interested in taking part in this, you can click here.
There will be a lot more where that came from and we hope you’ll join us and get behind this challenge. You can follow our LinkedIn company page to stay close to the activities we have planned – we’re sure some of it will benefit you, your friends & colleagues.
